In Memoriam:
Arthur J. Miller, Sr., Ph.D. (1919 – 1992) =
A MIT Ph.D. in
physical chemistry took him on a life-long journey
of scientific discovery and research administration.
His razor-sharp mental prowess was packaged in a
diminutive 5’8’ frame. Highly placed
in the
Manhattan
Project; a leader of the NEPA Project (Nuclear Energy
for the Propulsion of Aircraft); and finally the Oak
Ridge National Laboratory’s Associate Director –
Space Programs. He was wickedly smart…without
a doubt, the smartest man I will ever know.
His clarity of thought and insight into technology,
research,
business, economics, history, was wrapped up in a
package that was honest and decent to the core.

Willis B. Miller (1931 – 2002) =
No relation. Except we were members
of the unofficial
Railroad “brotherhood,” sharing respect and admiration
For the rail industry. An Electrical
Engineer with
an Illinois Institute of Technology B.S., Willis worked
for ALCO, EMD, Martin-Marietta, Precision National,
and finally managed several small short-lines that
operated his beloved Alco Centuries. I met Willis
while in graduate school, and quickly realized he
had forgotten three times as much railroading
as I would ever come to know. Willis
worked as my
Assistant Railroad Coordinator on several studio
features in the 1990s (Fair Game, Courage Under
Fire), adding tremendous insight and expertise at
critical occasions. Physically imposing
and outwardly
gruff, Willis had an unsurpassed, wickedly fast ability
to size up problems and come up with practical and
cost-effective solutions.

The Real Boss:
BANDIT. Found in 1998 in a ditch adjacent
to a Tennessee Southern Railroad industrial spur, about 30 seconds from being washed
away in a torrential downpour. Rescue
kitties are the most loyal kitties.
